You're passionate and that makes you awesome. (bonus tracks)

Pep Talk Extended Version: Unless someone is in your exact same line of work, it’s tough for them to fully the grasp the intricacies of your job. But that doesn’t keep them from shooting off at the mouth at every friggin’ reunion or reception, now does it? “I bet you rake in crazy dough this time of year.” What? Get out of my wallet. “So why aren’t you famous yet?” Are you drunk? Is this how you talk to strangers? “What are you planning after graduation?” I don’t know, you’re stressing me out, go away!!! Maybe they want to get you off balance with uncomfortable questions so they feel better about themselves. Maybe they’re just clueless and trying their best to hold their own in a convo with fascinating, hot, worldly you. Either way, they probably won’t even listen to your answer. You don’t do what you do so you can impress acquaintances. You are living hard and working hard because you have passion. That is something personal that deserves your protection. Maybe you’re broke right now. Welcome to the club! The other members include The Rest of the Planet. Good thing inspiration is independent of cash flow. I sincerely hope that today you feel vital and receptive to the positive energy coming from your homemade support system. I wish you inspired progress toward your goals and an easy going attitude in the face of adversity.

Today remind yourself: I’m passionate and that makes me awesome.

We all make choices about how we live our lives. You can take a paint-by-numbers approach, or you can start with a blank canvas. When you paint by numbers, the end result is guaranteed. You know what it’s going to be, and it might be good, but it will never be a masterpiece. Starting with a blank canvas is the only way to get a masterpiece, but you could also blow up. So, are you going to pick the paint-by-numbers kit or the blank canvas?

Researchers have known for years about the harmful effects of negative emotion on thinking and decision making. More recent evidence has shown that positive emotion has the opposite effect—when we are in a good mood, we think better. We consider more possibilities; we’re open to considerations that would otherwise not occur to us; we see subtle connections between pieces of information that we might otherwise miss.

It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look, which morally we can do. To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts.

Prayer is not asking. It is a longing of the soul. It is daily admission of one’s weakness. It is better in prayer to have a heart without words than words without a heart.
